It’s never an easy feat to win over your partner’s Chinese mom. This is especially true if you’re a widely liberal person — it almost always clashes with their age-old views.

Meeting your dating partner’s Chinese mom anytime soon? You’ll need to put your best foot forward to earn their approval. But how will you do it?

1. Dress well

Meeting your date’s Chinese mom wouldn’t be a walk in the park. They can be a little judgmental of the person dating their kid. So, be sure to look good when meeting your date’s mom for the very first time.

You don’t need to wear a suit or a long gown for your first meeting. Anything’s fine as long as it isn’t sports attire, anything distressed, revealing, or shirts with graphic images.

2. Address them properly

Calling someone’s parents by their first names works well in the West but not in many Asian countries. Hence, consult your date on what to call their mom upon your first meeting. You could always go with ‘Mrs’ or, if you wish to be personal yet respectful, call them ‘Auntie.’

3. Save the PDA for later!

Dial down the touching or kissing when you’re in front of your date’s mom! Being affectionate in front of them can set you on the wrong foot right off the bat. It implies disrespect for their mom — it’s also inappropriate to do it at the dinner table.
